Accra is Ghana's capital city and is estimated to have a population of around 2 million although the official statistics are not very accurate and noone really has much of an idea. Accra is a large sprawling city and developing very fast, despite the huge fluctuations in the value of the local currency (the cedi) against the dollar. As it is a coastal city there is a port and several beach hotels where tourists may stay although the cleanliness of the beaches is questionable.

Ghanaians are traditionally very friendly people and they pride themselves on the peaceful state which the country has maintained since independence. Especially since it is bordered by other countries (Ivory Coast and Togo) which are currently experiencing much political upheaval and military oppression.

The local population is predominantly Christian although there is also a large Muslim population. English is the national language which all understand in Accra as well as local tongues which vary according to area. In Accra the predominant local language is Ga. In Ashanti Region, where the Ejura project is, the people speak Twi, which foreigners tend to find easier to pick up than the other native languages.

Visa Requirements

In Ghana, no matter what period of time you are issued your visa for, it will automatically be valid for 2 months upon arrival at the airport. You can extend the visa every two months for as long as you like for a cost of about $5 US/month. You must apply for your visa before you leave, as no visas are issued in the airport.
