Another Hope Childrens Ministry
|
IntroductionAn officially registered Community-Based Organization, Another Hope Children's Ministry (AHCM) is dedicated to bringing hope through love and care to orphaned or impoverished street children in Uganda. We are committed to child development, advocacy, and a strength-based holistic approach in responding to the problems that face vulnerable children. Our children are provided with accommodation, food, clothing, healthcare, and educational opportunities (both vocational and formal school training), and also receive instruction in morals, manners, and how to live in our society. The love and care we provide changes the children's stories from one of hopelessness to hopefulness and gives them the tools they need to not only envision a different future, but to live it. Please join our family and help us achieve Another Hope. The Environment:Another Hope Children's Ministry is located in the capital city of Uganda, Kampala, in the Nansana East District. We are a short minibus ("taxi") ride away from the amenities of downtown Kampala, but live in area where open spaces are more common than the heart of the city. Although we are a "Christian" home, we provide support to children from all backgrounds and religions. It is estimated at least 20% of the children in Uganda are orphaned and the Nansana area reflects this statistic. Currently the 30+ children we support, some who stay in other foster homes and some who live permanently on site, are all HIV/AIDs orphans. Our aim is to expand support for additional orphans throughout the community. We may not be able to help all, but we certainly can make a difference in these children's lives and invite you to help us.

Through your Kids Worldwide Fees, we provide a volunteer's bedroom (shared by up to 2 people), a private volunteer's bathroom, and on-site cooked meals throughout the day including morning tea with escort (a simple food to accompany the porridge and/or tea), a hearty lunch, and a large supper. Food varies and may include beans, posho (cornmeal), rice, potatoes, meat, fish, nuts, peas, cassava, matoke (a type of banana akin to a potato in taste), and other fruits and vegetables in season.
The volunteer's bathing room is a separate and large, drainable room attached to one of the volunteer's bedrooms. It does not have running water. Like most places in Uganda, you will use a basin and jerry can to bathe.
The longer you stay, the less support you will need in
learning and operating in our culture, and the more independent assistance
you will be able to provide us. Our fee structure reflects this trend,
but whether staying for 2 days, 2 months, or more, we can use your positive
spirit and willing hands!

Project Manager

Ms. Ruth Bulyaba, the Founder and Executive Director of Another Hope, received her Diploma in Information Systems Management and her Bachelor's Degree in Statistics. Her salary as Data Manager at Mulago Hospital in Kampala supports the children of Another Hope. Ruth's dedication, compassion, and vision for the future has inspired other community members to volunteer their time in support of Another Hope Children's Ministry.
Who do we need?
We need people who can help us face our greatest challenges. These include:
-Schooling: Developing and running after-school activities,
tutoring primary-aged (elementary) children, creating and implementing
educational programs during holidays, assisting and teaching in the
local schools our children attend, even regular communication in English
(the language used in schools) will help us educate these anxious-to-learn
children!
- Health: We need people who can assess and provide
training and support in basic health care. The support needed varies
widely; it may be putting plasters/bandages on scraped knees, classes
on avoiding dehydration, or it may be providing monetary support when
the children need hospitalization for example.
-Basic Childcare: From ensuring the little ones have bathed and brushed their teeth to making sure each child has clean clothes, we could use your help!
-Accommodation: Currently we live in a rented facility and have faced eviction in the past. We need people who can help us raise funds to purchase or build our own home. Construction experience will benefit us in the latter scenario and help maintenance of the home as well. Having a permanent, stable home they can call their own will greatly and positively affect the children.
-Income-Generation:
Of course your monetary donations of Kids Worldwide fees will support
and help all our children and are greatly needed, but we desire to teach
our children life-skills and self-reliance. We currently run a poultry
project and rent chairs, tables and baskets for events. We'd like to
expand and improve these projects with your help. We'd also like to
develop a Secretarial Bureau and would need help with training and managing
such a program, a Piggery Project and would need assistance in care
of the animals, and welcome your ideas for starting other income-generating
projects.
Your Job
Based on your skill set and desires, we welcome you to share your talents and enthusiasm and help us create a bright future for these children.
We need assistance in many areas: childcare, education, health, developing support programs (such as creating income-generating projects or a child-sponsorship program), helping us to develop and manage our Kids Worldwide Volunteer Program, providing activities in music, dance, drama, crafts, etc, and other areas.
Our children range in age from 3 years - 16 years, with most of the children under 10 years old. If you feel you can give positively to children, we know you can help us
* As this is a new project, we have no volunteer experiences as yet.
